Geodrilling specialist saves more than 20% on fuel thanks to Atlas Copco DrillAir compressors
When Spanish geodrilling expert, Cimentaciones Abando, needed to replace its drilling compressor units, a field test trial revealed Atlas Copco’s DrillAir mobile high-pressure compressors could save the company more than 20% of its annual fuel costs.
Recognized as a leading authority within the geotechnical sector, Cimentaciones Abando, S.A. is committed to the permanent training of its staff and to the constant renewal of its equipment and machinery, instinctively adopting the latest technologies available in the market. The Bilbao-based company prides itself on its fast and reliable service and expects the same approach from equipment suppliers.
Technically advanced machines
When the time came for a new set of drilling compressors, the company’s Fleet Manager, Julen Abando, sought technically advanced machines that could deliver high performance with low fuel consumption. Atlas Copco’s DrillAir H23 compressor looked like the best solution on paper. However, to be certain, Cimentaciones Abando requested a trial run before making a final decision.
The H23 is part of Atlas Copco’s DrillAir range of high-pressure portable compressors developed for applications such as ground engineering, pipeline services, water well and geothermal drilling. The DrillAir range consists of 7 compressor models, all stage V compliant with flows between 20.6 – 42 m3/min and operating pressures from 15 up to 35 bar.
A major feature of the portable compressors is Atlas Copco’s innovative Smart Air XC4004 controller. Powerful and intuitive, the controller increases the efficiency of operations by providing advanced insights that put users in full control of all major parameters.
The H23 on trial
The trial provided conclusive evidence of the compressor’s capabilities: “Atlas Copco allowed us to test an H23 during a few weeks before deciding. We monitored performances, fuel consumption and we also assessed the ease to operate and service the compressor,” commented Julen Abando. “The results were very positive: the H23 outperforms comparable compressors when it comes to fuel efficiency. We were surprised to see that fuel savings easily exceeded 20% over the whole operation cycle and even more at partial load. The new controller was also easy to get to grips with. This technically advanced machine simply delivers on its promise.”
The compact H23, complete with tow bar and brake, is designed for easy movement and transportability - the whole compressor fits on one truck together with the drill rig and brake. The 232-kW machine is powered by a Scania DC9 Stage V compliant 5-cylinder diesel engine producing a free air delivery of 23.6 l/min at a working pressure adjustable from 15 to 20 bar. Maintenance intervals extend up to 1000 hours and those of the engine to 500 hours.
Cimentaciones Abando has ordered two H23 DrillAir machines that offer them a combination of easy operation, optimum performances, low fuel consumption and a guaranteed fast return on investment.
Commenting on the successful outcome and the benefits offered by the DrillAir range Hendrik Timmermans, vice-president marketing for Atlas Copco's Portable Air division said: “Our unique DrillAir product portfolio is greatly appreciated by many drillers, who not only rely on our compressor's reliability; but have also become accustomed to their outstanding performance and total cost of ownership."
