Atlas Copco’s new two-tool compressor enables cost-effective Stage V compliance and improved productivity

2/11/2020

Atlas Copco’s compact and powerful XAS 58 air compressor helps operators leverage the benefits of powering two hand tools from a single unit while complying with Stage V regulations. The compact compressor weighs under 750kg and it can be towed behind a regular car without a special driving license, ensuring ease of use at any construction or demolition site.

The company wanted to give construction managers a cost-efficient way to address the upcoming Stage V regulation without losing the benefits and cost-savings associated with two-toolers. As the regulation affects machinery with diesel engines over 19kW, traditional two-tool compressors will require additional equipment to limit emissions to ensure compliance, eliminating the saving achieved by using one compressor to power two tools. To overcome the issue, Atlas Copco re-engineered its popular XAS 58 compressors, fitting it with a mechanical engine under 19kW. Thanks to the innovative design, the engine size does not limit airflow: the compact compressor delivers a powerful airflow of 3 m3/minute. The new XAS 58 from Atlas Copco is the first mobile compressor in the market that provides airflow of 3m3/minute with an engine under 19kW. What is more, customers benefit from a lower cost, compared to Stage V compliant two-toolers with larger engines.

The XAS 58 is designed to power two hand tools, for example, two RTEX 25 breakers that need 50l/s, at the same time. This enables managers to increase the productivity of their workforce, whilst effectively cutting the investment in half, including any associated transportation and servicing costs. This leads to a significantly reduced total cost of ownership (TCO). Additionally, as well as the hand tools, the XAS 58 can also power a dust extractor, helping optimise health and safety and reduce pollution on site.

Built for harsh environments, such as construction and demolition sites, the XAS 58 features Atlas Copco’s patented HardHat® canopy. Made of tough linear medium-density polyethylene (PE), the robust cover protects the compressor from the elements, ensuring reliable operation and increasing its working life and re-sell value. For additional usage of compressor on site, the compressor is also available with an integrated generator.

To ensure safe transport even on rough ground, the XAS 58 features a strong undercarriage made from a single sheet, and a spillage-free frame to eliminate any risk of ground contamination. The simple and durable design enables quick and easy servicing in under 60 minutes, minimising downtime. A starter motor protection system and anti-airlock system are also available for guaranteed start-up in any conditions.
